Growing up as Western New Yorkers, we were raised to love the Buffalo Bills and our football Sundays. This is the best day of the week for us– a day where we get to watch our favorite beloved team (win or lose), spend time with friends and family, eat good food, drink good beer, and just relax. And if the Bills win, it’s a great day.
What makes footballs Sunday even better? As I said the food. One of the most common football foods is chili and let me tell you it is big in Western New York. Chili cook-offs are becoming an increasingly popular event where we have the excuse to eat massive amounts of it. From participating in a few, and experimenting with recipes on my own– I’m here to tell you the best recipe I have found online. It’s basis but pulls together an amazing pot of chili at the same time.
So, here it is friends:
What do you need?
- 1 lb ground beef
- 2 onions
- 1 green pepper
- 1 can (14 oz.) Mexican-style tomatoes
- 8 oz. can tomato sauce
- 2 tablespoons cumin
- 2 tablespoons chili powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1 can kidney beans (drained)
- 1 can black beans (drained)
- 1 cup water
Once you obtain these ingredients, first cook the meat with the sliced onions and peppers and slowly add everything else to your pot. Simple as that. Cover and simmer the chili for 2 hours and then it’s ready to eat!
Add some cheddar cheese, avocado, and sour cream or plain Greek yogurt to top it off. And of course, have your bowl of chili with your beer of choice. It’s a perfect food and drink pairing for a football Sunday.
Our Great Lakes Festival this June 4th and 5th will introduce you to even more food and drink pairings by our amazing Chef Paul. Make sure to save the date!
